Ingredients

  • 9 cups Chex cereal rice, corn, or wheat - or a combination!
  • 1 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 12 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chips
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 1/2 cup Christmas sprinkles optional, for festive flair

Equipment

  • Large microwave-safe bowl
  • Rubber spatula
  • Large resealable bag (gallon size)
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Very large bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper

Method

  1. Measure the Chex cereal into a very large bowl. Set aside.
  2. In a microwave-safe bowl, combine the butter, peanut butter, and chocolate chips.
  3. Microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir well. If not completely melted, continue to microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until smooth.
  4. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the Chex cereal. Gently fold to coat the cereal evenly. Be careful not to crush the cereal.
  6. Pour the powdered sugar into the large resealable bag.
  7. Add the chocolate-covered cereal to the bag. Seal the bag and gently shake until the cereal is completely coated with powdered sugar.
  8. Spread the Puppy Chow on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper to cool.
  9. If using, sprinkle with Christmas sprinkles while the chocolate is still slightly tacky.
  10. Let cool completely before storing in an airtight container.

Notes

For best results, melt the chocolate mixture in short intervals, stirring frequently to prevent burning. A combination of Rice, Corn, and Wheat Chex provides the best texture. Store the cooled Puppy Chow in an airtight container to maintain its freshness. Experiment with variations by adding chopped nuts, pretzels, or other holiday-themed candies.
