Ingredients

  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Fresh strawberries
  • Fresh raspberries
  • Fresh blueberries
  • Chocolate shavings or chocolate chips
  • Optional: Caramel sauce
  • Optional: Chopped nuts
  • Optional: Crushed cookies

Equipment

  • Baking pan
  • Mixing bowls
  • Electric mixer
  • Trifle bowl or large glass bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula
  • Knife
  • Plastic wrap

Method

  1. Preheat oven and prepare brownie mix according to package directions (or use your favorite homemade brownie recipe).
  2. Bake in a pan according to package directions. Let brownies cool completely.
  3. In a large bowl, beat softened cream cheese until smooth and creamy.
  4. Gradually add sweetened condensed milk and vanilla extract, mixing until well combined.
  5. Gently fold in thawed whipped topping; be careful not to overmix.
  6. Cut cooled brownies into bite-sized pieces.
  7. Place about half of the brownies in an even layer at the bottom of the trifle bowl.
  8. Spread half of the cream filling over the brownies.
  9. Sprinkle half of the fresh berries over the cream filling.
  10. Repeat layers with the remaining brownies, cream filling, and berries.
  11. Garnish the top layer with chocolate shavings or chocolate chips. Drizzle with caramel sauce and sprinkle with chopped nuts or crushed cookies, if desired.
  12. Cover the trifle with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.

Notes

For best results, chill the trifle for longer than 2 hours to allow the flavors to meld. Use a fudge brownie mix for a richer flavor. You can substitute other berries or fruits. Consider adding a tablespoon or two of powdered sugar to the cream filling if it seems too runny. If the brownies are too dry, brush them with simple syrup (equal parts sugar and water, heated until the sugar dissolves) before assembling the trifle. The trifle can be assembled up to 1 day in advance, but the brownies may become slightly soggy over time.
