Method
- In a large, microwave-safe bowl, combine the chocolate chips, peanut butter, and butter.
- Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring in between, until everything is melted and smooth. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate.
- Stir in the vanilla extract.
- Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the Chex Mix in a very large bowl.
- Gently stir until all the cereal is evenly coated.
- Place half of the coated Chex Mix into a large Ziploc bag.
- Add half of the powdered sugar.
- Seal the bag tightly and shake vigorously until the cereal is completely coated in powdered sugar.
- Repeat with the remaining Chex Mix and powdered sugar.
- Spread the Puppy Chow in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- While the Puppy Chow is still slightly sticky, sprinkle generously with Christmas sprinkles.
- Allow the Puppy Chow to cool completely before storing it in an airtight container. This usually takes about 30 minutes to an hour.
Notes
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or freeze for up to 2 months. If chocolate seizes, try adding a teaspoon of vegetable oil or shortening. If powdered sugar is clumping, sift it before using. Customize with peppermint candies, white chocolate and cranberries, marshmallows and graham crackers, Nutella, pretzels, M&Ms, or spices. Puppy Chow can be used in parfaits, bark, as an ice cream topping, or mixed into trail mix.
