Ingredients

  • 1 cup warm milk 105-115°F
  • 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast 1 packet
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg, lightly beaten
  • 3 - 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for dusting
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 4-6 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh parsley optional
  • 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder optional
  • Pinch of salt

Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Whisk
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Stand mixer (optional)
  • Dough hook attachment (optional)
  • Lightly greased bowl
  • Plastic wrap or clean kitchen towel
  • 9x13 inch baking dish or cast iron skillet
  • Small saucepan
  • Pastry brush
  • Oven

Method

  1. Activate the Yeast: In a large bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and sugar. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes, or until foamy.
  2. Combine Wet Ingredients: Add the melted butter and beaten egg to the yeast mixture. Mix well.
  3. Add Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the flour and salt, mixing until a soft dough forms. Start with 3 cups of flour and add more, a tablespoon at a time, until the dough is no longer sticky.
  4. Knead the Dough: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for 5-7 minutes, or until smooth and elastic. You can also use a stand mixer with a dough hook.
  5. First Rise: Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, turning to coat. Cover with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place for 1-1.5 hours, or until doubled in size.
  6. Punch Down the Dough: Gently punch down the dough to release the air.
  7. Shape the Rolls: Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and place them in a greased 9x13 inch baking dish.
  8. Second Rise: Cover the rolls with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel and let rise in a warm place for 30-45 minutes, or until puffed up.
  9. Prepare the Garlic Butter Topping: While the rolls are rising, melt the butter in a small saucepan. Add the minced garlic, parsley (if using), garlic powder (if using), and a pinch of salt. Stir well.
  10. Bake the Rolls: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Brush the rolls generously with the garlic butter topping.
  11. Bake: Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. More Garlic Butter: As soon as the rolls come out of the oven, brush them with the remaining garlic butter topping.
  13. Serve: Let the rolls cool slightly before serving. Enjoy!
