Ingredients

  • Pretzel rods: 1 bag approximately 30-40 rods
  • Chocolate chips: 12 oz semi-sweet, milk, or dark chocolate
  • Vegetable shortening or coconut oil: 1-2 tablespoons
  • Sprinkles: Your favorite assortment
  • Optional Toppings: Chopped nuts
  • Optional Toppings: Shredded coconut
  • Optional Toppings: Mini chocolate chips
  • Optional Toppings: Sea salt

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper or wax paper
  • Heat-safe bowl
  • Saucepan (for double boiler method)
  • Microwave (optional)
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Fork or dipping tool
  • Airtight container

Method

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or wax paper.
  2. In a heat-safe bowl set over a simmering pot of water (double boiler method) or in the microwave, melt the chocolate and vegetable shortening (or coconut oil) together.
  3. Stir frequently until smooth and completely melted.
  4. Hold a pretzel rod by one end and dip it into the melted chocolate, swirling to coat evenly.
  5. You can dip the entire rod or leave a portion uncoated for easy handling.
  6. Gently tap the pretzel rod against the side of the bowl to remove any excess chocolate. You can also use a fork to scrape off excess.
  7. Immediately sprinkle the dipped pretzel rod with your favorite toppings while the chocolate is still wet.
  8. Work quickly, as the chocolate will start to set.
  9. Place the decorated pretzel rod on the prepared baking sheet.
  10. Repeat with the remaining pretzel rods and chocolate.
  11. To speed up the hardening process, you can place the baking sheet in the refrigerator for 10-15 minutes.

Notes

For best results, use high-quality baking chocolate or melting wafers. If chocolate seizes, add a teaspoon of vegetable shortening at a time, stirring vigorously, until smooth. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or in the refrigerator in warm climates. Experiment with different types of chocolate, drizzles, candy bar toppings, and nuts for creative variations.
