Ingredients

  • 9 cups Rice Chex cereal
  • 12 oz white chocolate chips
  • 1/4 cup strawberry flavored cake mix
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup freeze-dried strawberries, finely crushed
  • Optional: Pink food coloring

Equipment

  • Large bowl
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Spatula
  • Large Ziploc bag
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Food processor or rolling pin (for crushing strawberries)

Method

  1. Pour the Rice Chex cereal into a large bowl.
  2. In a large, microwave-safe bowl, combine the white chocolate chips and butter.
  3. Microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring after each interval, until the chocolate is completely melted and smooth. Be careful not to overheat the chocolate.
  4. Stir in the strawberry cake mix, vanilla extract, and pink food coloring (if using) into the melted chocolate mixture until well combined.
  5. Pour the melted chocolate mixture over the Rice Chex cereal. Gently fold the cereal into the chocolate until it's evenly coated.
  6. In a large ziplock bag, combine the powdered sugar and crushed freeze-dried strawberries. Seal the bag and shake well to combine.
  7. Add the chocolate-coated cereal to the bag with the powdered sugar mixture. Seal the bag tightly and shake until the cereal is completely coated.
  8. Spread the puppy chow in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper to cool completely.
  9. Once cooled, store in an airtight container.

Notes

Don't overheat the chocolate to prevent it from seizing. Use high-quality white chocolate for the best flavor. Crush the freeze-dried strawberries finely for even flavor distribution. Shake the mixture well for a fluffy coating. Cool completely on a baking sheet to prevent clumping. Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. For added fun, include sprinkles in the powdered sugar mixture or drizzle with melted milk chocolate after cooling.
