  • 1/4 cup pickled jalapeƱos optional

  • 2 lime wedges

Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Spoon or spatula
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Bowls
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons

Method

  1. Chop the onion and mince the garlic.
  2. Prepare your chosen base (rice or lettuce). If using rice, cook according to package directions. If using lettuce, wash and shred.
  3. Gather all your desired toppings and have them ready to go.
  4. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  5. Add chopped onion and cook until softened, about 5 minutes.
  6. Add minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  7. Add ground turkey to the skillet and break it up with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes. Drain any excess grease.
  8. Stir in taco seasoning and water. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the liquid has evaporated and the turkey is well-seasoned.
  9. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  10. Place a generous amount of your chosen base (rice or lettuce) in a bowl.
  11. Top with the cooked turkey taco meat.
  12. Add your favorite toppings.
  13. Garnish with fresh cilantro and a squeeze of lime juice.
  14. Enjoy immediately!

Notes

For a spicier flavor, use homemade taco seasoning with chili powder, cumin, paprika, oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. The turkey taco meat can be made ahead of time and stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Customize your base with quinoa, cauliflower rice, or roasted sweet potatoes. Add chopped bell peppers, zucchini, or mushrooms to the turkey taco meat for extra veggies. For a creamy touch, add guacamole or cilantro lime crema. Try pinto beans or refried beans instead of black beans.
