Ingredients

  • 2 medium apples Granny Smith, Honeycrisp, or your favorite baking apple
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Small bowl
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups
  • Measuring spoons
  • Peeler
  • Knife
  • Cutting board
  • Oven

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Unroll one can of crescent roll dough. Separate into 8 triangles.
  3. Place one apple wedge on the wide end of each triangle.
  4. Roll up the dough around the apple wedge, starting at the wide end and rolling towards the point. Pinch the seam to seal.
  5. Repeat with the second can of crescent roll dough and remaining apple wedges.
  6. Arrange the apple dumplings in the prepared baking dish.
  7. In a small bowl, whisk together the melted butter, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  8. Pour the butter mixture evenly over the apple dumplings.
  9. Gently pour the lemon-lime soda around the dumplings in the baking dish. Do NOT pour it directly on top of the dumplings.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the dumplings are golden brown and the apples are tender.
  11. Let the dumplings cool slightly before serving. The sauce will thicken as it cools.

Notes

For the flakiest dumplings, avoid overworking the crescent roll dough. Gently unroll, add the apple, and roll it up. To prevent soggy dumplings, ensure the soda is poured around the dumplings, not directly on top. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in the microwave or a 300°F oven. Consider adding chopped nuts or raisins for added flavor and texture. Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream makes a great addition.
