Method
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour an 8x8 inch baking pan, or line with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, combine the diced apples, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Toss to coat evenly.
- In a large bowl, whisk together the melted butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar until well combined.
- Beat in the eggs one at a time, then stir in the vanilla extract.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Be careful not to overmix.
- Gently fold in the spiced apple mixture into the brownie batter. If you're using nuts, fold them in as well.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly.
- Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with moist crumbs attached.
- Let the brownies cool completely in the pan before cutting into squares.
- If desired, drizzle with caramel sauce and dust with powdered sugar before serving.
Notes
For best results, use high-quality cocoa powder for a richer chocolate flavor. Don't overbake the brownies to maintain a fudgy texture. Start checking for doneness around 25 minutes. Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days or in the refrigerator for up to a week. For a gluten-free version, substitute the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free all-purpose flour blend. Add chocolate chips or experiment with different spices like ginger or cardamom for a unique twist. Serving suggestion: Warm with vanilla ice cream.
