Method
- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium heat.
- Add the chopped onion and green bell pepper and cook until softened, about 5-7 minutes.
- Add the ground beef to the skillet and break it up with a spoon. Cook until browned, draining off any excess grease.
- Stir in the garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, cayenne pepper (if using), salt, and pepper. Cook for another minute.
- Pour in the tomato sauce, ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, yellow mustard, and apple cider vinegar. Stir well to combine.
- Bring the mixture to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low, cover, and cook for at least 30 minutes, or up to an hour, stirring occasionally. Add a splash of water if the sauce gets too thick.
- While the Sloppy Joe mixture is simmering, prepare the hamburger buns. You can lightly toast them in a toaster oven or under the broiler.
- Spoon the Sloppy Joe mixture onto the toasted hamburger buns.
- Top with your favorite toppings, such as shredded cheddar cheese, coleslaw, or pickles.
- Serve immediately and enjoy!
Notes
For best results, use 80/20 ground beef for added flavor and moisture. Simmer the Sloppy Joe mixture for at least 30 minutes, or up to an hour, to allow the flavors to meld together. Toast the buns to prevent them from becoming soggy. Taste and adjust the seasoning as needed. Sloppy Joe filling can be prepared up to 3 days in advance and stored in the refrigerator or frozen for up to 3 months. Try adding red pepper flakes or hot sauce for a spicier version. Stir in shredded cheddar cheese or Monterey Jack cheese during the last few minutes of cooking for a cheesy twist.
