Smiley emoji pull-apart cupcakes

This cake will put a smile on everyone’s face – including yours as it’s so easy to make! Simply grab some pre-made cupcakes, mix the buttercream and follow our video instruction below on how to decorate.

  • 14 vanilla cupcakes

  • 500g salted butter, chopped, softened

  • 1kg soft icing sugar

  • Yellow, black and brown gel food colouring

  • Pink sugar powder

8 Method Steps


  • Step 1

    Arrange cupcakes

    (14 vanilla cupcakes) on a 28cm or larger round cake board, with 10 in the outer circle and 4 in the inner circle.


  • Step 2

    For the buttercream, place butter (500g salted butter, chopped, softened) in the bowl of an electric mixer and beat until pale and creamy. Gradually add icing sugar (1kg soft icing sugar) and beat at a low speed until combined, then increase speed and beat until whipped.

  • Step 3

    Place 1½ cups of buttercream in a bowl. Add a few drops of brown gel (Yellow, black and brown gel food colouring) colour and a few drops of black gel colour and mix to combine. Adding more colour and mixing well between each addition until you have the colour you desire.

  • Step 4

    Place ¼ cup of remaining buttercream in a second bowl. Add a few drops of brown gel colour and mix to combine. Adding more colour and mixing well between each addition until you have the colour you desire.

  • Step 5

    Add a few drops of yellow gel colour to the remaining buttercream and mix to combine. Adding more colour and mixing well between each addition until you have the colour you desire.

  • Step 6

    Fit a 40cm disposable piping bag with a 1cm round nozzle. Fill with the yellow icing. Pipe an outline around the cupcakes, then pipe rounds working from the outside in until all the cupcakes are covered. Smooth with a spatula. Tip: To get the icing really smooth, heat the spatula in a cup of boiling water and shake off any excess water before spreading the icing.

  • Step 7

    Using a toothpick, mark an outline for the emoji facial features. Fit a 20cm piping bag with a 0.5cm round nozzle. Fill with the dark brown buttercream and use to pipe the outline for the eyes and mouth, then pipe with buttercream to fill. Fit a second 20cm disposable piping bag with a 0.5cm round nozzle and fill with the light brown buttercream. Pipe some inside the eyes and mouth and smooth with a spatula.

  • Step 8

    To finish brush the pink sugar powder (Pink sugar powder) on either side of the mouth to create rosy cheeks.
