Pineapple hedgehog dip

We’re reliving the hedgehog heyday with this easy crowd‑pleaser, so let’s get this pineapple party started! Simply scoop out the pineapple, fill it up with retro French onion dip and decorate with mini bites of cheese, cabanossi, olives and other nibbles that take your fancy.

  • 1 pineapple

  • 150g cheddar, cut into twenty 2cm cubes

  • 360g Twiggy Sticks, cut into twelve 3cm pieces

  • 60g cabanossi, cut into ten 2.5cm pieces

  • 50g camembert, cut into five wedges

  • 12 glacé cherries

  • 8 cocktail truss tomatoes

  • 6 green olives

  • 6 black kalamata olives

  • 5 gherkins

  • 6 green grapes
  • Old-fashioned French onion dip


  • 300ml carton sour cream

  • 40g packet French onion simmer soup mix

4 Method Steps


  • Step 1

    To make the dip, place the sour cream

    (300ml carton sour cream) and soup mix (40g packet French onion simmer soup mix) in a bowl and stir until well combined. Place in the fridge for 20 minutes until chilled and thickened.


  • Step 2

    Use a sharp knife to cut the top off the pineapple (1 pineapple), about 4cm from the top. Use a small sharp knife to cut a 1cm-wide border around edge of pineapple. Score inside the cut edges then use a metal spoon to scoop out fruit until about 5cm-deep.

  • Step 3

    Lay the pineapple on its side. Thread a cube of cheese (150g cheddar, cut into twenty 2cm cubes) onto a toothpick and press into the side of the pineapple. Repeat to make a row of 5 cubes down the length of the pineapple, using picture as a guide. Continue to place alternating rows of twiggy sticks (360g Twiggy Sticks, cut into twelve 3cm pieces), cabanossi (60g cabanossi, cut into ten 2.5cm pieces), camembert (50g camembert, cut into five wedges), cherries (12 glacé cherries), tomatoes (8 cocktail truss tomatoes), olives (6 green olives|6 black kalamata olives), gherkins (5 gherkins), grapes (6 green grapes) and cheddar around the pineapple, using picture as a guide.

  • Step 4

    Place the pineapple upright on a serving plate. Spoon the dip into the centre to serve.

You will need about 100 toothpicks for this recipe. 

If you’re short on time, you can use bought French onion dip instead.
