(35 vanilla cupcakes) on a 90cm x 60cm cake board, starting with 10 cupcakes in the first row, then 11 for the second, then 10 for the third. Placing the cakes in an interlocking pattern so the central line is longest. At the point between the 3rd and 4th cupcake on each external line, add 3 cupcakes for the hilt.

  • Step 2

Make the buttercream in 3 batches. For each batch, place 500g of butter (1.5kg salted butter, chopped, softened) into the bowl of an electric mixer and beat until pale and creamy. Add 1kg of icing sugar (3kg soft icing sugar mixture) and beat at a low speed until combined, then increase speed and beat until whipped.

  • Step 3

Divide the icing into 4 portions in separate bowls. To the first bowl, add a few drops of blue gel (Blue, teal and brown gel food colouring) colour and mix to combine. Adding more colour and mixing well between each addition until you have the colour you desire. Repeat with teal and brown, making a light and a dark brown.

  • Step 4

Fit a piping bag with a star nozzle and fill with the light brown icing. Pipe 4 lines in a square, then fill with piped stars, over each of the 7 cupcakes sitting horizontally just below the blade to create the sword hilt. Fit a piping bag with a star nozzle and fill with the dark brown icing. Pipe 4 lines in a square, then fill with piped stars, over each of the 7 external cupcakes below the light brown sword hilt to create the sword handle. Fit a piping bag with a star nozzle and fill with the blue icing. Pipe 4 lines in a square, then fill with piped stars, over each of the 13 external cupcakes above the sword hilt, to create the sword blade. Of the 2 remaining uniced cupcakes in the sword hilt, pipe the lower one with blue. Fit a piping bag with a star nozzle and fill with the teal icing. Pipe 4 lines in a square, then fill with piped stars, over each of the 6 internal cupcakes to finish the sword blade. Then pipe the remaining cupcake in the sword hilt.
